7–12 Hands-On Project Gallery

12 advanced maker-projects in rhetoric, cartography, and performance. Each card pairs an interview prompt ("The Chat") with a rigorous build ("Hands-On Action") — turning a conversation with a historical leader into a portfolio-grade artifact.

Grade Band 7–12

Advanced Rhetoric, Cartography, & Performance

Historiography, advanced textual analysis, complex spatial execution, and multimedia delivery.

1

The Strategic Council of War Sand-Table Map

The Chat

Query them regarding terrain limitations, troop deployments, and logistical failures during a turning-point battle.

Hands-On Action

Engineer a physical 3D topographic grid or sand-table map of the battlefield and author a formal tactical command brief.

2

The Living History Monologue Video Performance

The Chat

Capture their internal conflicts, speech cadences, and distinct rhetorical flourishes at a major turning point.

Hands-On Action

Pen a multi-page dramatic monologue script and record an edited video performance in period-accurate tone and dress.

3

The Underground / Revolutionary Broadside Print

The Chat

Gather the explicit arguments and rallying cries used to mobilize populations against an oppressive regime.

Hands-On Action

Use linocut block-printing or manual print templates to typeset an authentic, striking political broadside.

4

Philosophers' Symposium Debate Script

The Chat

Interview two distinct figures from the same era who disagreed completely on government, religion, or science.

Hands-On Action

Write a comprehensive comparative essay styled as a live Socrates-style debate script between the two figures.

5

Topographical Expedition Logbook

The Chat

Ask about the native flora, fauna, weather, and landmarks discovered during a historic journey or campaign.

Hands-On Action

Bind a physical leather/paper logbook filled with hand-drawn botanical sketches and first-person weather observations.

6

The Memorial Monument Design Pitch

The Chat

Ask what they believe their true, lasting legacy or impact on modern society is.

Hands-On Action

Build a 3D architecture model (out of foam core or wire) of a public monument dedicated to them, accompanied by a written design statement.

7

The Foreign Policy White Paper

The Chat

Interview a world leader, diplomat, or monarch (e.g., Cleopatra, Eleanor Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt) about a complex geopolitical crisis or border dispute they managed.

Hands-On Action

Write a formal 3-page policy memorandum or briefing paper from the perspective of an advisor. Critically evaluate the leader’s decisions, outline the long-term regional consequences, and propose a modern alternative strategy.

8

The Yellow Journalism Exposé & Counter-Campaign

The Chat

Interview a figure who was heavily vilified or mythologized by the media during their lifetime (e.g., Marie Antoinette, Sitting Bull, Grigori Rasputin).

Hands-On Action

Design two opposing media pieces. First, layout a sensationalist "Yellow Journalism" front-page column attacking the figure using period-accurate biases. Second, draft a strategic public relations defense campaign or broadside correcting the record using the primary evidence gathered during the interview.

9

The Architectural Mini-Monument & Spatial Analysis

The Chat

Interview an emperor, pharaoh, or builder (e.g., Qin Shi Huang, Shah Jahan, Pericles) about how they used monumental architecture to project power, instill religious awe, or control populations.

Hands-On Action

Construct a precise architectural scale model of a monument or fortification using balsa wood, foam core, or wire. Accompany the physical structure with a written spatial analysis essay explaining how the layout physically directed human movement and reinforced social hierarchies.

10

The Historiographical "Trial of History" Dossier

The Chat

Interview a highly controversial historical actor whose actions are deeply debated by modern scholars (e.g., Christopher Columbus, Napoleon Bonaparte, Julius Caesar).

Hands-On Action

Compile a legalistic evidentiary dossier. Divide the portfolio into three sections: Primary Source Evidence (quotes and records provided by the figure), Conflicting Interpretations (how different centuries viewed them), and a final, analytical "Judicial Ruling" written by the student determining their true historical legacy.

11

The Underground Press Linocut Block Print

The Chat

Interview an underground resistance leader, abolitionist, or dissident (e.g., Harriet Tubman, Joan of Arc, Mahatma Gandhi) about the symbols and metaphors they used to secretly unite an oppressed population.

Hands-On Action

Carve a symbolic protest image into a soft linoleum block or foam printing plate. Manually roll ink onto the block and stamp a series of 10 identical resistance posters or flyers, appending a typed explanatory manifesto detailing the historical risks of distributing such media.

12

The Curated Museum Exhibition Catalog

The Chat

Interview a prominent scientist, collector, or artist (e.g., Charles Darwin, Marie Curie, Leonardo da Vinci) about the exact sequence of discoveries or artistic periods that defined their career.

Hands-On Action

Design a physical or digital multi-page museum exhibition guide. Map out a thematic floor plan for a gallery dedicated to their life, illustrate a catalog of 6 core artifacts or paintings, and author advanced curatorial placards for each piece explaining its cultural and scientific impact.
