This is not just for paper. A basket with nothing added to it holds the same amount as before. One more guest at the door means one more chair, not a whole new count of the room. This is worth learning because knowing easy facts by heart frees your mind for the harder ones.

Watch for it today, and when you spot it, tell someone what you noticed and how you knew. You are going to like this one. Two facts are so easy they are worth memorizing right now. Adding zero changes nothing: 7 plus 0 equals 7, because you joined an empty group.

Adding one just moves you to the next counting number: 7 plus 1 equals 8. You do not have to count from the beginning for either one. When you spot a plus zero or a plus one in a problem, you can answer instantly and save your thinking for the harder parts.

Test these rules yourself. Put seven beans on the table and add none. Count them: still seven. Now add one bean and count again: eight. Seeing a rule work with your own hands is what turns it from something you were told into something you actually know. Little by little, this becomes something you just know.
