Core Content

This idea walks around your house all day. Knowing coin values by heart is what lets someone count change quickly at a busy counter. This is worth learning because a coin’s size does not tell you its value, so the values must be known.

Watch for it today, and when you spot it, tell someone what you noticed and how you knew. Ask yourself where else the same idea might be hiding, then go and look.

This idea is simple once you see it. Size does not decide worth. A penny is worth one cent, a nickel five cents, a dime ten cents, and a quarter twenty five cents. The dime is small but worth more than the bigger nickel, which surprises everyone at first.

Here is a trick: nickel and five both feel chunky, dime and ten both sound thin and quick. Say the four values out loud daily until they arrive without thinking.

Try a coin drill. Someone holds up a coin and you say its name and value as fast as you can. Ten rounds a day for a week and these four values will be yours permanently. Try a few on your own, and be patient with yourself.
