This idea walks around your house all day. Counting to fifty is enough for real jobs. Fifty states, fifty stars, fifty chairs to set out for a gathering. This is worth learning because a steady rhythm keeps you from skipping numbers in a long count.
Watch for it today, and when you spot it, tell someone what you noticed and how you knew. Ask yourself where else the same idea might be hiding, then go and look.
This is a good thing for a young mathematician to know. Counting past twenty follows a pattern. After twenty come twenty one, twenty two, twenty three, all the way to twenty nine. Then thirty starts a new group and the little numbers begin again.
Keep a steady beat as you count, like a clock ticking, and the pattern will carry you. Clap or tap once for each number. Steady rhythm keeps you from skipping numbers when your mouth moves faster than your mind.
Watch out for the twenties and thirties. Many people slip from twenty nine straight to forty, skipping the thirties entirely. Practice that jump on purpose: twenty eight, twenty nine, thirty, thirty one. A rough spot practiced becomes a smooth spot. Do it carefully rather than quickly, and thank God for a mind that can learn.
