You will meet this idea in ordinary days. Numbers past one hundred appear on price tags, house numbers, page numbers, and mile markers. This is worth learning because solid counting to 120 is the doorway into second grade numbers. Watch for it today, and when you spot it, tell someone what you noticed and how you knew. Ask yourself where else the same idea might be hiding, then go and look.

Here is today’s math treasure. Take stock of this strand. You can count from any number up to one hundred twenty. You can hear the pattern in the number words and know that after ninety nine comes one hundred.

You can read numerals and write them correctly, including tricky ones like 103 where zero holds a place. Practice by writing every number from 95 to 120 and reading them aloud to someone who can check your work.

Try reading numbers aloud from a real page: a calendar, a book, a receipt. Reading numbers in the wild is different from reading them in a neat row, and the wild is where you will actually need this skill. Take your time. Careful is better than fast.
