Core Content

Here is where this shows up in real life. Skilled workers own many tools and choose deliberately. Owning five strategies means very few problems can stop you. This is worth learning because knowing several strategies means no problem leaves you stuck.

Watch for it today, and when you spot it, tell someone what you noticed and how you knew. Ask yourself where else the same idea might be hiding, then go and look.

Here is something worth knowing today. Look at everything you can do now. You can count all the objects. You can count on from the larger number. You can make ten and then add the rest. You can use a double or a near double.

You can find a friendly pair inside three numbers. That is five strategies for one operation. A good mathematician looks at the numbers first and then chooses. Try 8 plus 6 and name which strategy you picked and why.

Here is your check. Look at 7 plus 8 and decide your strategy before computing. Make ten? Near doubles? Counting on? Say the choice out loud, then solve. Naming your strategy first is what separates thinking from guessing. Practice this a few times and it will start to feel easy.
