Core Content
You will meet this idea in ordinary days. Pattern making is real work for weavers, tile setters, and designers, and it is also simply delightful. This is worth learning because finding and making patterns is one of the deepest habits in all of math.
Watch for it today, and when you spot it, tell someone what you noticed and how you knew. Ask yourself where else the same idea might be hiding, then go and look.
Watch this carefully, friend. Now create. Use shape tiles to build a picture: a triangle roof on a square house, a circle sun, rectangle windows. Or build a repeating pattern, like triangle, square, triangle, square, continuing steadily.
A pattern is a rule that repeats, and once someone sees your rule they can continue it themselves. Design something beautiful and then say the rule you used out loud.
Watch out for patterns that are almost regular. If your rule is triangle, square, triangle, square, then a stray circle breaks it. A pattern is a promise, and a broken promise is noticed immediately. If you get stuck, use your fingers or counters. Good mathematicians use tools.
