Core Content

Here is where this shows up in real life. Two ways of saying one time is like two ways of writing a number. Both are correct and both get used. This is worth learning because people say time both ways, so you should understand both.

Watch for it today, and when you spot it, tell someone what you noticed and how you knew. Ask yourself where else the same idea might be hiding, then go and look.

Get your eyes and your fingers ready. Half past three and three thirty are the same time said two ways. On a digital clock it looks like 3:30, where the thirty means thirty minutes past three. Practice saying both forms out loud for the same clock.

Some people speak one way and some the other, so you want both in your ears. Write four times both ways today and read them back to someone.

Try saying every half hour time both ways for a whole day. Half past one and one thirty. Half past two and two thirty. By evening, both forms will sound equally natural to you. You will use this idea again and again, so build it strong today.
