Here is where this shows up in real life. Position matters elsewhere too. The same key in the wrong lock opens nothing. Placement changes meaning. This is worth learning because place value is why we can write any number with only ten digits.
Watch for it today, and when you spot it, tell someone what you noticed and how you knew. Ask yourself where else the same idea might be hiding, then go and look.
Here is something worth knowing today. In a two digit number, each digit has a job that depends on where it sits. In 52, the 5 sits in the tens place and means five tens, which is fifty. The 2 sits in the ones place and means two ones.
Now look at 25. Same digits, different places, completely different number. Position carries meaning in math, so where a digit stands matters just as much as which digit it is.
Try this test. Build 38 and 83 side by side with rods and cubes. Look at how different the two piles are, even though the same two digits made them. That difference is the whole idea of place value standing in front of you. Practice this a few times and it will start to feel easy.
