Core Content

Look for this idea outside of your lessons. A worker counting a partly filled crate starts where the count already stands, not back at one. This is worth learning because counting from anywhere shows you know the pattern, not just a song.

Watch for it today, and when you spot it, tell someone what you noticed and how you knew. Ask yourself where else the same idea might be hiding, then go and look.

Let us think about this slowly. Real counting rarely starts at one. Someone says start at eighty seven, and you must go from there: eighty eight, eighty nine, ninety. This proves you know the order, not just a memorized song.

Practice starting at hard spots, especially just before a new ten like thirty nine or sixty nine, because those are where people stumble. If you can jump in anywhere, you truly own the counting sequence.

Try this drill. Have someone say a random number under one hundred and count on ten from there. Do it five times. This is the skill that makes counting useful in real life, where nothing ever starts at one. Show your work to someone and explain it in your own words.
