Think about where you have seen this before. Recipes sometimes list the total first, then the parts. The order of telling does not change the amount. This is worth learning because flexible reading protects you from being tricked by unusual arrangements.

Watch for it today, and when you spot it, tell someone what you noticed and how you knew. Ask yourself where else the same idea might be hiding, then go and look.

Here comes a new math idea. The total does not have to come last. Writing 9 equals 4 plus 5 is perfectly correct, because both sides still hold nine. This surprises people who expect the answer at the end.

But the equal sign only cares about balance, not about which side is fancier. Practice reading sentences written both directions so an unusual arrangement never confuses you on a test or in real life.

Try writing four sentences today with the total on the left. If it feels strange at first, that strangeness is exactly the habit you are undoing. After a few days, both arrangements will look equally normal, which is how it should be. Try it once with someone beside you, then try it alone.
