Core Content
This idea walks around your house all day. Puzzles train the same thinking that solves real problems. Play is often practice in disguise. This is worth learning because playful practice sticks in your memory better than dull practice. Watch for it today, and when you spot it, tell someone what you noticed and how you knew. Ask yourself where else the same idea might be hiding, then go and look.
This idea is simple once you see it. Now play. I am thinking of a number. When I add three to it, I get eleven. What is my number? Count up from three to eleven, or take three from eleven, and you find eight.
Try another. Two numbers make ten, and one of them is six. What is the other? Four. Riddles feel like games, but every one is honest math practice wearing a fun hat.
Try writing a riddle that is hard but fair. Give enough clues to find exactly one answer. If two different numbers could both work, your riddle needs another clue, and noticing that is real mathematical thinking. Try a few on your own, and be patient with yourself.
