You will meet this idea in ordinary days. Real problems arrive as stories, not as worksheets. Nobody hands a carpenter a page of sums. They tell him about a hallway and ask if the shelf will fit. This is worth learning because most real math arrives as a story, not as a bare number sentence.

Watch for it today, and when you spot it, tell someone what you noticed and how you knew. Watch this carefully, friend. A story problem is a little story with numbers tucked inside. Listen all the way to the end before you touch a pencil.

Then find the numbers and say what each one counts. In the story, four birds sat on a fence and two more came, four counts birds already there and two counts birds that arrived. Last, find the question. The question tells you what you are hunting for. Numbers without a question are just facts. Here is a habit worth keeping.

After you find the numbers, say the story back in your own words before you compute anything. If you cannot retell it, you did not understand it yet, and no amount of careful adding will rescue an answer to the wrong question. If you get stuck, use your fingers or counters. Good mathematicians use tools.
