Today you get to learn something useful. Subtraction has a kind side. Say you have five stickers. You give two away. Now you can count what is left. The number is smaller. But something else grew that no number shows. Your friend is glad. Your own heart feels lighter too.

Try this today. Count something you have plenty of. Give one away. Then count what is left. The number shrank by one. That is honest arithmetic. Now ask yourself a question. Did anything else grow? Numbers measure amounts. They are not the only thing worth measuring. Go slowly the first time.

Go faster the fifth time. This is not just for paper. Every gift is a subtraction problem from one side. It is an addition problem from the other side. What leaves your hand arrives in someone else's hand. God does not measure your giving by what you have left. He looks at your heart.

He sees whether you gave cheerfully. So practice both today. Count honestly. Give gladly. This is worth learning because numbers tell what happened. Your heart decides what it meant. Watch for it today. When you spot it, tell someone what you noticed and how you knew. Ask where else this idea hides. Then go look.
