Core Content

You will meet this idea in ordinary days. Gratitude grows when blessings are counted rather than assumed. What we count, we tend to value. This is worth learning because what you count is what you learn to value. Watch for it today, and when you spot it, tell someone what you noticed and how you knew. Ask yourself where else the same idea might be hiding, then go and look.

Watch this carefully, friend. Some good things are too many to count one at a time. Think of meals eaten this year, or nights you slept safely, or kind words someone gave you. Count them in tens and the pile becomes visible.

God’s gifts arrive so steadily that we stop noticing them. Counting by tens is a good way to notice again, and noticing is where thankfulness begins.

Try counting a specific set of blessings by tens: ten meals, ten kind words, ten mornings you woke up safe. Naming them one at a time is slower than a vague thank you, and it changes you more. If you get stuck, use your fingers or counters. Good mathematicians use tools.
