This is not just for paper. Real scales work this way. A grocer balances weights against beans until both sides match exactly. This is worth learning because misunderstanding the equal sign causes trouble in every math year ahead. Watch for it today, and when you spot it, tell someone what you noticed and how you knew. Ask yourself where else the same idea might be hiding, then go and look.

Today you get to learn something useful. Many people think the equal sign means the answer comes next. It does not. It means both sides hold the same amount, like a balance scale that hangs level.

In 5 plus 2 equals 7, the left side is seven and the right side is seven. You could also write 7 equals 5 plus 2, and it would still be true. Whenever you see the equal sign, picture a scale hanging perfectly level.

Watch out for this old habit. Many people read the equal sign as now write the answer, and then they are confused by a sentence like 8 equals 5 plus 3. Retrain yourself now by saying is the same amount as every single time you read it. Go slowly the first time and faster the fifth time.
