Think about where you have seen this before. Loading a wagon in a different order does not change how heavy it is. Order changes the work, not the amount. This is worth learning because this freedom lets you make hard problems easy on purpose.

Watch for it today, and when you spot it, tell someone what you noticed and how you knew. Ask yourself where else the same idea might be hiding, then go and look. Here comes a new math idea. With three numbers you may group them any way you like and the total never changes.

Try 2 plus 5 plus 8. Add two and five to get seven, then eight to get fifteen. Now add five and eight to get thirteen, then two to get fifteen. Same total both times. This freedom is a gift, because it lets you pick the easiest path. Test it yourself with counters until you believe it.

Try proving this yourself with counters. Build three piles, then combine them in two different orders and count each time. When both counts match, you have tested a rule rather than just believing it. Testing what you are told is a good habit in math and elsewhere. Try it once with someone beside you, then try it alone.
