Look for this idea outside of your lessons. An empty basket after the picnic is a real math answer. So is a basket nobody touched. Both are worth naming honestly. This is worth learning because these two rules work for every number you will ever meet, even huge ones.
Watch for it today, and when you spot it, tell someone what you noticed and how you knew. Let us look at this together. Here are two subtraction facts you can know instantly. If you take away zero, nothing changed: 6 minus 0 equals 6. If you take away everything you had, nothing is left: 6 minus 6 equals 0.

These two facts work with any number, big or small. Knowing them saves you from counting when there is nothing to count. Test them with counters if you like, because a true rule holds up every time you try it. Try both rules on a big number.
One hundred minus zero is one hundred. One hundred minus one hundred is zero. The rules did not care how large the number was. That is what makes a rule useful, since it saves you work with numbers you have not even learned yet. Say it out loud once, and then try it with real objects.
