This is not just for paper. Numbers are built, not random. God set the world in order, and our number names follow patterns you can learn to hear. This is worth learning because seeing ten inside teen numbers is the door into place value.

Watch for it today, and when you spot it, tell someone what you noticed and how you knew. Ask yourself where else the same idea might be hiding, then go and look. Today you get to learn something useful. Ten plus a small number is wonderfully simple.

Ten plus three is thirteen. Ten plus six is sixteen. Ten plus nine is nineteen. Hear how the answer says the small number and then the teen ending. Every teen number is really ten and some more, hiding under an odd sounding name. Once you hear ten inside each teen number, teens stop feeling mysterious and start feeling orderly.

Here is a caution about the teen names. Ten plus five is fifteen, and fifteen sounds like five first. Do not let the sound trick your writing. Say ten and five, then write 15, with the ten part in front where it belongs. Go slowly the first time and faster the fifth time.
