This is not just for paper. A builder who knows the finished wall must be nine feet and has five feet built knows exactly what remains. This is worth learning because the position of the unknown never changes how you find it.

Watch for it today, and when you spot it, tell someone what you noticed and how you knew. Ask yourself where else the same idea might be hiding, then go and look.

You are going to like this one. Sometimes the blank comes first. In blank plus 5 equals 9, the whole is nine and one part is five. Take five away from nine and you find four.

Or count up from five to nine, which also gives four. It does not matter which position the blank sits in. The whole is still the whole, and the missing part is still whatever fills the gap between them.

Try saying it as a question. Something plus five is nine, so what is that something? Turning a blank into a spoken question makes your mind hunt for a number instead of freezing at an empty space on the page. Little by little, this becomes something you just know.
